Soul links are player-made save points in Ori and the Blind Forest. They serve a number of purposes alongside functioning as save points, as they both set the player's respawn point and serve as a place to acquire upgrades within the Ability Tree. They are superseded by Spirit Wells which are virtually identical, with the exception that they are immobile and double as teleporters in Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition.

Usage[]

To create a Soul Link, the player must have one Energy Cell available and its cooldown must be complete. When this requirement is met, the player must hold E (Keyboard) / X (Xbox) / A (Nintendo Switch) for a brief time, from which the player will be given haptic feedback (if applicable) and a distinctive "ping" sound will be played to signify that the save has been created.

The sound used when a Soul Link is created or when the player respawns.

Limitations[]

There are a number of conditions in which the player will be unable to create a Soul Link regardless of its cooldown state or the amount of available energy, such as:

  • If the player is in the air
  • If the player is in an area dubbed "unsafe" (such as a mini-boss room prior to its completion)
  • If the player is on a part of the ground that can be broken or standing on a rigid body (Unstable Ground)
  • If the player is underwater
  • If the player is actively in an escape sequence

The sound used when the player cannot create a Soul Link or has insufficient energy.

Notes[]

  • In One Life mode, a Soul Link can still be created to provide access to the Ability Tree or provide a checkpoint should the player wish to close the game, however, as the name of the difficulty entails, it is not possible to respawn at a Soul Link in One Life mode.
