The Ginso Tree is the place that contains the clean waters of Nibel. Before Ori purified it, the tree was rotten and dotted with bits of decay. Note that you get a ability, Bash, while climbing the tree. The Ginso Tree holds within its walls the Element of Waters, and its sister locations the Forlorn Ruins and Mount Horu house the other two elements. To continue the game, Ori must first cleanse the waters and escape through the top. A short cutscene will occur and automatically progresses the game.

Many areas, such as the Sunken Glades and Hollow Grove, can be revisited to collect items Ori missed. But the Ginso Tree, much like the Forlorn Ruins, cannot be returned to once the Water Escape sequence is finished. The entryway to this area will be blocked off for the rest of the game. So it is important to find the items before you leave, since you cannot collect them at a later time.

But there is an exception to this: Before you enter the Ginso Tree, or at least very early in the level, it would be useful to save. Since Ori and the Blind Forest allows you to return to multiple Spirit Link sites, saving at the beginning of the level would be helpful if you realize you missed some items and can return to that save point easily (especially if you are going for a 100% run).

Probably the most crucial item is the single Energy Cell that is often missed. Once Ori has been given the Bash skill, conveniently located before it, the player must continue up. At a certain point, you will approach three Mortars spewing projectiles from their mouths. The first two will propel you up to the third one, and to the left (just past the third Mortar) there is a small space. In it there is a passageway going down, but it is blocked off. Go back to the third Mortar and wait for it to spit out a projectile, and send it towards the obstacle (be aware that this may take several tries). If directed correctly, the projectile will break the barrier, allowing you to travel downwards. There will be a portal, which will send you straight to the Energy Cell. Once you have collected it, you will go back through the portal. A Mortar will appear to your right and spit a projectile, sending you flying back the way you came.

At the conclusion of the Ginso Tree, Ori rekindles the Element of Waters and subsequently causes a gigantic flood to rush up the inside of the tree, triggering the Water Escape sequence. During the escape, Ori must use all the skills they have learned to avoid the rising water, as touching it too many times results in damage and death. In the original game, and on Normal or harder difficulty in the Definitive Edition, dying at any point during the escape will force players to start from the beginning of the section; on Easy difficulty, extra checkpoints are added to make this section simpler to beat.

Also, during the Water Escape sequence, there are many Spirit Light Containers along the way. They are very easily missed or just ignored, because there is so little time to grab them in the first place. And for those who are trying to achieve a "Zero-Death" run, the task can be daunting when lethal water is involved. It will take some practice.

"The waters of Nibel once flowed through this very tree... Now it's all rotten and dried up inside. We shall restore the flow, the Ginso Tree's heart we must find."

- Sein to Ori in the Ginso Tree.

The Ginso Tree is a gigantic structure in the forest of Nibel. It houses the Element of Waters inside its trunk and was responsible for purifying the waters of the forest that passed through it. After Kuro's actions caused the Spirit Tree to lose his power, the Ginso Tree became rotten and dry, its inner chambers wrecked with the decay of the blinding.

As part of Ori's journey to rekindle the Elements of Light, they must first obtain the Water Vein from Gumo in order to enter the Ginso Tree.

Ori and the Blind Forest/Definitive Edition

Inside the Tree

The majority of the time spent in the Ginso Tree involves solving platforming puzzles and climbing situations in order to reach the top where the Element is kept. During the ascent, Ori learns the Bash skill from an Ancestral Tree, an ability that allows them to catapult off of various objects to gain extra height, redirect projectiles to open up areas or even damage enemies. The Ginso Tree's primary secret is the single Energy Cell that is often missed, but easily accessible once Ori has been given the Bash skill.

Water Escape

At the conclusion of the Ginso Tree, Ori rekindles the Element of Waters and subsequently causes a gigantic flood to rush up the inside of the tree, triggering the Water Escape sequence. During the escape, Ori must use all the skills they have learned to avoid the rising water, as touching it too many times results in damage and death. In the original game, and on Normal or harder difficulty in the Definitive Edition, dying at any point during the escape will force players to start from the beginning of the section; on Easy difficulty, extra checkpoints are added to make this section simpler to beat.

Conclusion

As Ori reaches the top of the tree, the rekindled Element of Waters causes a thunderstorm which begins to wash over the forest, purifying the forest's corrupted waters and making swimming now possible. Suddenly, Kuro appears, and pushes Ori off the top of the Ginso Tree and to their apparent doom. They reawaken later, thanks to Gumo's help, in the Thornfelt Swamp.

Ginso Tree Blocked

The top of the Ginso Tree, sealed off in the Definitive Edition

 • In the original version of Ori and the Blind Forest, the Ginso Tree is one of three areas that cannot be accessed again once the relevant sequence has been completed, the other two being the Forlorn Ruins and Mount Horu (as finishing the game locks out that save file). In the Definitive Edition, players can reenter the tree through the main entrance or through a Spirit Well warp to pick up any secrets they may have missed. The inside of the tree changes in appearance, with waterfalls and flowing water abundant throughout instead of the decay that existed before. The very top of the tree, where Ori first encountered Kuro after the Water Escape, is blocked off by branches and remains inaccessible.
